DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing)

DTS(Distributed Temperature Sensing) is an equipment measuring temperature by using several kilometers to dozens of kilometers of optic cables as temperature detection sensor.
This equipment is an element of linear temperature detection system having infinitely many sensor spots.

DTS is a connected optic cables which enter and analyze laser pulse back scattered and returned for measuring temperature.

The signal which falls under the part of raman anti-stokes of returned laser shows certain variance caused by surrounding temperature and, by calculating that variance, we can identify which place and how much degrees of temperature has an impact so that the temperatures in all the sections bordered on optic cables will be detected.

Based on the same principle that the bats send supersonic waves and detect echo returned for identifying the location of article by using the time consumed, certain location can be identified by analyzing time consumed for laser pulse entered and returned with DTS. This is called OTDR(Optical Time Domain Reflectometry).

Likewise, DTS is an equipment which makes us to identify which place and how much degrees of temperature has an impact so that the temperatures in all the sections bordered on optic cables will be detected.

Factors having impact on overall performance and alarming ability of DTS system

  • Distribution status and condition of sensor cables
  • Surrounding environment

At the actual application site, the detection of various events is influenced by the same conditions as described above and other ones. After installing DTS system at the site, optimal solutions are provided by reflecting the variables on relevant project environments at most through additional engineering process including distance adjustment and temperature adjustment.

A calibration work is to be gone through in order to analyze temperature pattern by sections, improve overall performance and, minimize mistakes in alarming.

The circumstances and unique values of all the sites are different and it is necessary for optimizing process for event detection values on a regular basis after initial installation and calibration work. (for example: it may be necessary upon changes in seasonal and environmental conditions)
